Global Production
Global production for the 2021/22 pistachio year was down 16 percent to 826,000 tons as declines in Iran and Turkey more than offset record U.S. output. As a result of lower available supplies, world consumption, and trade declined.
U.S. Production
In 2022, U.S. production gained 11 percent to a record 524,000 tons due to a combination of high yields and increased bearing area. The last time output increased in 2 consecutive years was 2010/11 when high yields were also combined with additional acreage. Exports were 40 percent higher to a record 328,000 tons on strong shipments to top markets China and European Union. Despite record shipments, ending stocks continued to climb to a record 180,000 tons.
California Production
Nearly 99 percent of U.S. pistachios are produced in California, and of that, 40% of the pistachios grown in the US come from Fresno County.
In Fresno County, pistachios remain the third most valuable crop produced in the county, behind almonds and grapes, and cash in more than $722 million in gross receipts. Growers last year yielded 3.5% more nuts on average as bearing acres climbed 7.7% to over 132,000.
