Ribbon-cutting Ceremony for Newly Rebuilt Portion of Friant-Kern Canal is on Friday, June 21

The public is invited to attend the ribbon cutting ceremony a newly rebuilt portion of the Friant-Kern Canal on Friday, June 21 at 10:30AM and will take place at the Avenue 136 bridge in Porterville. RSVP by June 17th to mppublicaffairs@usbr.gov

The ceremony is to celebrate the completion of Phase 1 of the construction project known as the Middle Reach Capacity Correction Project. Phase 1 of the project took a total of four years to complete and consisted of repairing a ten-mile segment that runs parallel to the canal and aims to restore the canal’s ability to carry water downstream to cities and farmland all the way to its terminus in Kern County.

In total, the project will repair 33 miles of the 152-mile-long Friant-Kern Canal, and has an expected price of $500 million. The project was initiated to restore 60% of Friant-Kern Canal's water holding capacity it lost due to land subsidence caused by groundwater overdraft conditions that occurred during California’s 2011-2019 drought.
